Anna Karenina
Ballet Company of Győr
Ballet in Two Acts
“Man was given reason so that he might free himself; therefore, he must be freed. Why should a man not put out the candle when there is nothing left for him to look at, when everything has become so hateful to behold? But how? (…) At that very moment, a freight train arrived…”
(excerpt from the novel)
The enchanting Anna Karenina is a respected member of society. Yet when she travels to Moscow at her brother’s request, she encounters the dashing military officer Vronsky, whose brilliant career lies ahead of him. She does not yet know it, but from that moment on, her life will never be the same again…
Today, the Győr Ballet is one of the defining companies of Hungarian dance. Its repertoire embraces nearly every branch of dance art, from classical ballet to contemporary dance, from dance theatre to productions for children. Since its founding, there have been few corners of the world where the company has not performed: audiences at New York’s Joyce Theatre, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall, La Scala in Milan, as well as in Vienna, Athens, Paris, America, Japan, China, India, Russia, Denmark, and Israel have all applauded them. With the appointment of Director László Velekei, a new era once again began in the life of the ensemble, and now they bring one of the productions most closely associated with his name, the justly renowned Anna Karenina, to the Városmajor Open-Air Stage.
